Waiting for Snow

I have never seen snow.

Oh, I’ve seen slush on the side of the road. The deposits of a Zamboni after cleaning the ice. The far off glimmer of white on a mountain. But I’ve never seen flakes falling from the sky.

When we went on our Big Overseas Adventure to the US last year, we really hoped to see snow. It does snow in Australia. Just nowhere near me. But we were traveling in Autumn and we knew our chances would be slim.

Toronto was our big hope. They hadn’t received their first snow of the year yet, and while we heard reports of small flurries, we didn’t see any while we were there. We still had three weeks of our trip left, but we were heading south, away from the cold.

One day we stopped in Portland, Maine, on our way to Boston. We checked into a small B&B, each couple in a separate room, which was a treat for us as we’d spent most of our trip in a cramped RV. We spent the afternoon on a mail boat, visiting all the small islands, and I remember thinking everyone we saw could be a character in a Stephen King novel.

It was cold, really cold. My husband Michael kept checking the weather on his phone and lo! It reported the possibility of snow!

Once back to shore we went in search of warmth and food and stumbled into a bar called Three Dollar Deweys. It was campy and fun. The food was good, the beer cheap and we were all in a good mood. It’s funny how some of my best travel memories were made in pubs and bars, drinking microbrews and eating really hearty food.

I remember leaving the pub and walking through old Portland. There was something magical about that night. I don’t know if I can explain it. Maybe it was the glow of the lampposts in the fog. Maybe the cobblestones of the streets. Maybe just my husband’s hand in mine as we explored another world, our friends not far behind.

I remember looking up at a digital clock on a building that showed the temperature as it inched slowly downward. Even after we returned to our rooms, I kept creeping out of bed to look out the window. Waiting for magic. Waiting for snow.

I keep thinking about that night. More so lately. Because that’s what life feels like for me at the moment. I’ve done what I can. I’m where I’m supposed to be. And now I’m just hoping.

Watching.

Waiting for snow.

Snow on a mountain near Yosemite. The closest we came to snow.

New Beginnings

One of my favorite things about writing is that there is always a new story to tell. There are always new worlds to explore, new characters to journey with. You’re never truly done, because there is always more to do.

I’ve started a new story. This is both wonderful and terrifying. Wonderful because I love this world. I love these characters and I can’t wait to tell their story. Terrifying because in this business there are no guarantees. I could spend a year or more working on this story, and the market may shift. Another book just like it might come out. There is no way to know if this book will ever sell.

New beginnings are all about faith. That first step, that wonderful, terrifying step into the fog, is an act of faith. You never know where the journey might lead you. Should I have written that idea instead of this one? Should I have started somewhere different? Will anyone ever read this? Am I wasting my time?

I don’t think you can ever answer these questions. The questions you can answer are: Am I passionate about this story? Will I see it through to the end? Am I okay if no one ever reads it? Am I stretching myself? Is there anything else I would rather do?

It’s the answers to these questions that are really important. It’s the answers to these questions which really determine if that first step is worth taking. And for me it is. Now and always.

I want to be the person that tries, even if that means I will fail.

So, those are just a few thoughts I’ve had while starting my new novel :)

3078 / 70000 words. 4% done!
Oh, you want to know what the new project is about? I’ll give you a hint:

As I’m learning more and more about protecting the copyright of other creatives, and I have so much respect for DC Comics, I’ve taken the picture down. But you can find it here: http://media.dcentertainment.com/sites/default/files/files/2010/02/flsv2_6pp_prev-4-copy.jpg

Three Words

I’ve been reading a lot of posts by recently-agented writers lately, and it’s got me thinking about success. What differentiates successful people from the unsuccessful? In an industry where so much is subjective, and so much comes down to chance, how can anyone hope to rise above?

Adding to this train of thought was the quote that appeared on my daily calender at work today:

“I’ve failed over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.” — Michael Jordan.

I’ve come to the conclusion that there are things we can do. That successful people — or people who will in the future obtain success — share some similar qualities. And these are qualities I want to adopt.

Lisa Ann Chickos (one of the wonderful recently-agented writers) wrote a post recently about finding three words that represent the person you are, or want to be. This appeals to my goal-loving nature, and I do think there is power in writing something down, committing to it. So what are my three words? What are the qualities that will one day set me apart?

These are the ones I’ve chosen:

Confidence.

Optimism.

Persistence.

Now, I can’t claim that any of these words describe me now. Especially the first two. I find those difficult. But the only way I will succeed in this crazy business is if I can grab onto these words and LIVE them. Become them. Become the person I want to be.

I will be confident in my own abilities. I will stay optimistic in the face of failure and rejection. And I will persist. I will always persist.

So tell me: What are your three words?

Who do you want to be?

Dream big.
