Blue Mountains Trip

So this last weekend Michael, me, and two of our friends went on a roadtrip to the Blue Mountains to do a bit of location research for my new story!
It was amazing!!!

I came back with almost all of my story worked out, full of ideas and inspiration. And not only was it my first research trip, it was one of the first trips Michael and I have taken since we got married two and a half years ago, so doubly exciting!

Some awesome moments:

1. Seeing the Three Sisters for the first time – I can’t believe I’ve never been to Katoomba before. I’ve only ever seen them in pictures, which can’t really contain their majesty and the vast valley below.

2. I didn’t have great expectations of Scenic World, which is a railway down into the valley and a cable car back up, but it was actually pretty spectacular. I had no idea there was rainforest in the Blue Mountains. It was so beautiful. And the railway (steepest in the world) was really quite fun.

3. Real hot chocolate! Katoomba is all about the chocolate.

(Photo from the cafe’s website – we didn’t think to take a photo. The candle at the bottom of the orange canister melts the chocolate drops you place in the top with the warm milk…mmm)

4. Dinner at the Old City Bank Brasserie. Amazing pub food, AWESOME ambiance. Another photo from a website:

I love the old bankers lamps! I’ve decided that when I set up my office I’m going to decorate it 1920s style. So awesome.
Next door is this hotel:

As we were leaving, there was fog floating through the garden and we got some awesome, spooky shots on Michael’s iphone. Will post those later. The hotel is called the Carrington and it reminds me so much of the hotel the narrater met Max de Winter in Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, which is EXACTLY the feel I’m going for in my novel.

5. There were a ton of awesome waterfalls, and this one wasn’t the most spectacular but Michael did such an awesome job with this photo I had to post it:

6. Wisemans Ferry is a beautiful spot, and I can see how it would be very spooky in the evenings, with the fog on the river and the mountains looming up behind. It was beautiful and sunny while we were there, though:

So I have a ton to do now that I’m home. I’m thinking I may be able to start writing next week – the beginning of August, exactly a year after I started Tiger Eye. I’m excited and daunted and sleepy and I really need to do a load of laundry, but it was the most amazing trip and I wanted to share that with you. Those of you who actually know me can see more photos on my facebook :)

More Milestones

You know how last time I wrote, I was having trouble finding the excitement?

Well, the excitement has come. In fact, I was so excited about the upcoming submission process, that I finally got up the courage to post my draft query on Verla Kay’s Blue Boards. More than that, I included a call out for critique partners. Long time readers know how much finding a critique partner stresses me out. But I did it! Now to wait and see if anyone replies.

I’ve also started planning my next book, codename AGR. This part of the process is sweet – there’s nothing more exciting than having a new project in the works, getting to know the characters, exploring plot possibilities. Next weekend I’ll be embarking upon my first ever research trip with my husband and some of our best friends to the Blue Mountains. I’m so excited about this, you have no idea. When we get back I’ll have to post some photos. It’s one of the most beautiful spots in Australia IMO.

I’ve started the collage and I’ve named the town and started marking out major plot points. I can’t wait to start writing, but I’m holding back – I’ve still got some important points to determine and I’d like to have done the research trip and have a better understanding of the area before I begin.

But overall – so excited!

Oh, and I’ve also had some preliminary feedback from friends and family about Tiger Eye, which has been on the whole quite positive. I still have copies to send out to people (sorry it’s taken so long!) but should be doing that this week.

I’m off to do some research (leisure reading to the layman :) ). I hope your weekend has been as enjoyable as mine.

Break Time

On Tuesday I finished the second draft of my novel.

On Wednesday Michael designed a cover and printed the first copy.

On Wednesday night Michael began reading Tiger Eye.

Early Thursday morning I received my first reader comments.

On the weekend I will be sending copies out to Beta readers.

Am I excited? Well, no. Don’t get me wrong, I will be. But at the moment I am just bone-achingly, random-crying-jag exhausted. And just thinking about these wonderful things makes me more exhausted.

This novel was the biggest project I’ve ever embarked upon. It took an enormous commitment of time and energy to have made it this far. Even just contemplating the next steps makes me burst into tears. I guess I’m just a little overwhelmed.

As excited as I am to start the next book, and then complete a second round of revisions on Tiger Eye, I’m also really ready for a break.

It helps that I’m in semester break from uni. In the next few weeks I’m going to spend some time on my health, building up those good habits again, and just let the new story stew. (The two are linked – my favourite way to plan my stories is by taking long walks and runs, where I can let my subconscious work while exhausting my body).

Today, my first day of break, I will be spending the afternoon in sitcom bliss. Maybe I’ll have an early night so I can get up early and do some yoga.
